'Somebody That I Used To Know' is the second single from his third album. The song was released in Australia and New Zealand by Eleven Music on the 5th of July 2011.

When Gotye began to write this song, he wasn't thinking about making it a duet. The idea came to him after he had written the first verse and felt that another voice would be needed to continue.

This track uses a sample of Luiz Bonfá's instrumental "Seville" (1967).

The singer/songwriter told Rolling Stone Australia, "There is an ex-girlfriend I know. It was five-six years ago. It wasn't a nasty breakup, but it was messy in the sense that we hurt each other more than we needed to because it wasn't a clean break. I guess it's closest to what the chorus is about. We both realized we had to move on and we haven't seen each other since."
